"Sorry that I have not written sooner to say thank you again for all the copies of RIVEN and the other books that you graciously sent to be shared with the women at Tennessee Prison for Women.
I have been amazed and blessed with the response from the women who have read this novel. It is hard to be able to sum up all the responses in one letter.
Please just know that the story is touching so many lives of so many that you may never personally hear from...but it is happening all over the compound.
I have heard inmates yell across the pod at officers to read this book because it is the best book they have ever read. A dear lady who has vision in one eye because the prison finally took care of one of her eyes with cataracts is in the infirmary and read the entire book to her blind roommate who was about to give birth to a little boy. They were so excited to share their emotions about the book and wanted a copy of some discussion questions I found on the internet so they could continue thinking about the book.
The women in segregation who love to read were the first to read the book and have shared their reactions. Now, the women who don't like to read are asking for copies to read because of the comments by their neighbors in the pod.
One lady who refuses to read any fiction book took one from me at the chapel, but decided rather than read it, she would pray about to whom she should give the copy. She gave the copy to a woman and several days later, the lady knocked on their door to say that the book had changed her life and she had given her life to Christ.
These are the type stories I am hearing as the book is getting more and more readers. As more of our volunteers read the book, we feel that they will share the book with women in their groups who are searching for meaning and peace and forgiveness.

"I have read many, many books and found precious few that I would not only never forget, but that would have a lasting impact. Riven is now one of those. Up to this point, outside of the Bible, I considered the book "Heaven" by Randy Alcorn as very special. Getting back to Riven, to put it succinctly – Riven is absolutely PHENOMINAL!! WHAT A BLESSING!! I can assure you that it will stay with me long after the final page. There were many times while reading that I had to pause to collect myself. If this does become a movie what an impact it would have on non-believers and believers. Great, great book!"
"I just finished Riven. Incredible book –I didn't want it to end and I sobbed through the last two chapters and the Epilogue. It took forever to get to the end because I couldn't see, even after my son brought me a box of tissues. I wish every non-Christian and Christian would read it and, through the incredible journey of the individual characters and the scriptures, see God’s unconditional and unwavering love for us. I hope we'll see Riven in the movie theaters - the impact on people's lives will be phenomenal. "
"I am a volunteer at a women's prison where I have contact with those in segregation as well as other areas of the prison. I just finished reading Riven and the tears are still on my face. I have identified so many of the women in the character of Brady and the book just reaffirms the love Jesus has put in my heart for these women. I walk through the seg unit and stop at many of the doors to just listen, encourage, pray, cry, recommend and get books for them.
I just feel that this book will speak to so many of the women on the compound and make a difference as they deal with their own sin, unforgiveness, forgiveness, anger, judgement, and how God can possibly fit into their lives. Thank you for writing Riven."
"Riven is masterfully written. Not a surprise considering the author is Jerry Jenkins. The story is powerful and unforgettable and a thousand other adjectives. But don't start reading it before bedtime if you have to get up early next day! Read it and be blessed and.....keep a box of kleenex handy. Can't recommend it highly enough. The Mount Everest of Christian fiction."
"I have never read a more POWERFUL book. I just wanted to say Thank You.What an impact on all who read this book. It requires you to re-visit the crucifiction no matter how long you have been a christian and thought you knew what Christ had gone through for ALL of us.I will both share this with everyone that I know as well as read it again and again! "
"Amazing plot. Hooks you immediately from the first page. My jaw was open at the end. Unbelievable work! This book encouraged to me as a full-time Christian worker. It's also a great witnessing tool: phenomenal communication of THE GREATEST MESSAGE."
"Sometimes, there is great "wisdom" in Christian fiction books and Riven was absolutely wonderful....One of the best I have ever read. It gave me such an in dept look into God's mercy that I found myself crying as I was reading. Very heart touching indeed. Thank you for taking the time to write this outstanding book.
Riven is an incredible story of God's unfathomable mercy.......and a "life changing" God. You are an excellent writer and I know that comes from the Lord for His glory.
Thank you again for writing this book. "Good and lasting fruit for all eternity.""
"Thank you for such a wonderful novel with Christ at the center. The contrast of a Godless life without purpose, and one with Christ as center of Carey and Grace's marriage demonstrates how close Christ can bring our souls and spirits together when we are committed to him! I loved the book and have renewed my commitment to memorize His word. God Bless. I will be sharing this book with all my friends."

"You said "Riven" is your personal favourite of all the books you have written and that you carried this story with you from a young age. I wonder what life stories you lived through or observed in your younger years that created the passion behind this story? God has used those life experiences for His glory. "Riven" speaks with the heart of an evangelist and offers hope to broken humans. This is a beautiful story of God's love!"
"Wow... I'm not a big reader but this story is extremely touching. The length wasn't even an issue when i started reading... i just couldn't put it down."
"I read many books by Christian authors and have read some of your other books. This one was, in my opinion, the best written and most moving. I have not cried during a movie or book for a long, long, time, but tears were streaming down my face at the end of Riven."
"Riven is an epic journey! Mr. Jenkins has the phenomenal gift to bring a story to life and finding a way to make the reader see a piece of themselves in each character within the novel. This novel is a gripping, chilling, convicting, and redemptive story. It has the power to revive Christians and win the lost to Christ. Riven is a Masterpiece!"
"I had a hard time putting this book down. It's a must read for anyone discouraged in their christian walk who needs encouragement to "keep on keeping on"."
"Riven is so good that I have turned down lunch invitations at work just so I can read. This book evoked all of my emotions. A must read for anyone who questions the purpose of his/her life."
"Riven was a bold, powerful example of how God's love changes us into our best selves. I was glued. I still read to my fourteen year old son. We enjoyed riven together. Though it was "real" it was sensitive to the readers. I recommend it without reservation."
"Fabulous book! Thank you for writing such a fantastic story."
"I just finished reading Riven. It is the most amazing book I've ever read. I've never cried over a book before but couldn't stop crying toward the end of this one. Jerry Jenkins takes you where you and everyone else need to go. Bless you Jerry."
"I just loved the book. My husband was working in the prison system and it just seemed to fit. As soon as I finished reading it - I went out and bought another copy for my friend--she and her husband just loved it. Thanks for so many wonderful books."
"I was so touched by this book! I think that I went through every emotion as I read it. This story is the perfect example of God's love and ability to turn all things to Him when we give Him control of every aspect of our lives. I was speechless as I finished reading. Thanks for such a powerful story!"
"As a pastor who has served over 40 years in church ministry, I found this novel compelling and inspiring. Thanks for giving us a hope-filled story of how God can break hearts of stone and transform sinners into devoted followers of Jesus.
"
"I want to thank you for this book. It took me to places in my life that were very painful to revisit. The places God had given me peace over as well as taken away the nightmares years ago. Through your book I have been able to come closer to fully believing: "I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds". Awesome book and an awesome God."
"i started riven in the middle of the soon seris and now i can not put it down anther great work"
"wow! mr. jenkins if you get this please write me back. this book literally choked me up. pastor carey and grace are so like my parents it is unreal (they are pastor and pastor's wife too!) and brady is me in alot of ways. i served jail time and my life could have gone terribly wrong but God saved me. brady had sooo much going for him but he messed up big time! his mind set is alot like mine too how we rationalize are stupidity and procrastinate through life. but God always has a plan. i have to say that the middle of the book lost me but when he got saved and revival srarted to happen on the row praise the Lord if that can happen there why not in the normal world too? ending the book with brady diyng so terribly was the hardest thing i have ever read. thank you for reminding me what our Lord did for us and how horrific it was for Him. they should make a movie from this cuase it would totally school passion of the Christ! if this was your life's work WOW! please have another life's work soon!? i am telling everyone to read this book thanks again and you can look up my name cause i live in colorado springs"
"How honored I am to find my review here. I did indeed enjoy the book. I'm glad to see you enjoyed the review.
Linda Yezak"
" I would like to voice my appreciation to your commitment of the gospel message. Every book that I have read, that has been written by you, has the very clear gospel message. Besides a good story, every single book, can be used to lead a person to Christ.
Thank you, for that reason alone (as well as being very good books to read) I do not hessitate to recommend your books to anyone."
"I just put down Riven for the last time with tears streaming. The collision of the two main characters was masterful and their growth from despair to triumph through God was beautiful. I have parkinson's disease and reading has become difficult, but Riven was worth it. Thank you and God bless you. "
"Jerry, you never disappoint me. I read Riven in 24 hours while stranded at the Chicago airport a couple weeks ago. It was just like watching a movie straight for 1 whole day with only a few bathroom breaks! I just couldn't stop reading. I think God stranded me there on purpose. Wow what a great message! It really hit home because Brady reminds me a lot of our son, and what he could possibly get himself into and the pastor's family reminded me so much of us. You really know what it's like. Thanks again for your awesome book. I'm sharing it with friends."
"I am reading Riven right now and I am making the mistake of taking it to bed with me. That means, hitting the ground running in the morning. Should finish it in the next 48 hours. If you haven't got it...please do you will love it. Wonder what will happen to Brady."
"I just finished the book in tears. Thanks for the reminder of how Jesus died for me. I wish everyone could read this book, because too often we forget that Christ died for our sins so that we could have eternal life. Well written Jerry, God bless! "
"I just finished reading Riven and it was well written and I just wanted to tell Jerry how much I enjoy the story. Is it a true story? If not well done Jerry well done. It touched every emotion.
Thanks"
"I wanted to write and thank Mr. Jenkins for writing this book. I was riveted, reading it quickly in a matter of a few days. My sons all asked me why was I was crying. Other times I stopped and sang the hymns! Thank you for blessing me. I didn't think I could love Jesus more, but my love for Him sweleed as I read. I write a daily blog and am always blessed when I learn that my words ministered to another. I wanted to be sure and let you know that your words, so eloquently written in this book, touched me. I am thanking God for you."
"A masterful way of eliciting emotion from your readers! As soon as I finished the book, I tweeted all my friends and told them it was a must read. Fantastic in every way!"
"Mr Jenkins, I just want to say that Riven had me in tears! It disturb me greatly, in a positive way. You have the gift of words, so that I actually feel that I am in the midst of the events. Thank you for putting the crusifixtion in such a way, that one actually experience the emotions. My prayer is that God will bless you so much that you will be able to write many more books.
"
"I'm a grown man and real men don't cry. Forget it, this book will end that cliché. "
"I feel the same way as Thomas every once in a while. This was the most wonderful book I have read in a long time (and I read all of the time). I actually cried while reading the last couple of chapters. What a blessing. Am sharing this book with the ladies in my class at the correctional facilities that I teach at. Thank you, thank you, thank you."
"is the most intriguing, captivating, and heartrending book I have ever read and early this morning I started reading “Riven” again. I want to make sure I did not miss a single thing. Also there is no one except a Christian father that could ever understand the unbelievable joy in his heart when a daughter who had wandered away from the church would say to him : “ No, I mean home to Church. Will you save me a seat?”
"
"My wife bought this book. We have since shared it with many friends. It is the best fiction book that I have ever read!"
"I just finished Riven today and I can't quit thinking about it. The book held my attention like no other in a long time. I was fascinated with how the two story lines were separate
and then meshed together. The ending made such an impression on me. I felt like I was one of those watching a TV and veiwing Brady's execution. I will be thinking about this for some time. Thank you so much."
"Every Christian should read this story in my humble opinion. The ending is perhaps the most unusual in my memory. We're telling a lot of souls to read it.
The book was riveting for us. Please convey our compliments and sincere appreciation to Mr. Jenkins.
"
"I read RIVEN without putting it down except for small breaks. I was up all night and had to work the next day. It is such a moving book. I sincerely hope this book is made into a movie. Of course I wish all Jerry B Jenkins books were made into movies as my husband does not and will not read a book. I love RIVEN and recommend it for anyone. Thank you for Jerry for such a great book."
"Just finished reading RIVEN. Outstanding. Couldn't put it down. Even though I knew Brady would end up on death row, I kept rooting for him to succeed and thought maybe he'd somehow avoid the ultimate punishment. Bravo on such amazing characters, the bold and unexpected twist to the storyline, and the awesome conclusion. Can't wait to see the movie. Thanks for writing such a powerful story. Thanks for blessing me once again with your writing. I pray an abundance of God's blessings on you."
"Riven ws not an easy book for me to read.I have been involved in prison ministry for many years I had to "back away" for breaks knowing where Brady was headed. The heaviness on Pastor Carey's heart was understandable. At times I have wondered if anything I say is really making a change in lives. Caring for my husband at home during his last months with us also helped me relate to Pastor Carey.
I pray Riven is much more than a good read or fascinating. Prison ministry doesn't have to be scary - there is a rewarding opportunity for correcting inmate Bible studies through CrossRoad Bible Institute."
"Jerry
I'm an avid reader and you have been a favorite through the years, but, after reading Riven, I have a new favorite novel/author. What a life
changing book. When it comes to the CROSS, nothing else can compare.
You brought the meaning to life in a way that I pray touches many lives.
Thank you and God bless"
"This is without a doubt, one of the most powerful and best books that we have read."
"I took Riven on vacation and thoroughly enjoyed it. The story carried me along. I loved the themes -- faithfulnes, revival, steadfast love, and more. So glad the book is now in paperback with the movie no far behind. "
"Recently I was given a copy of Riven at the Christian Writers Guild Conference in Colorado Springs. This past week, about a month later, I went back to the Broadmoor Hotel for Spring Break with my family. I am a big reader of non-fiction books, but occasionally read a good fiction book. I didn't know anything about Riven, it was laying on my desk, I picked it up and took it with me. As I began to read it on our trip, I couldn't put it down. (I'm often this way with good fiction!)I read thru the night, read while I waited for my family, read it at every little break I had hear and there. THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!!!!!!!!!!! Can I say that again? THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ! (And, I really have read a lot.) For about the last three chapters I was literally balling while I read it. I so did not expect the ending. This is MORE than a book of fiction. This book has the potential to change many lives. I can only imagine the effect this book would have in our prison system. That should be our goal-to get this book in every prison in this country! And as a high school teacher, I believe this book would be a great tool to get into the hands of kids in our alternative schools and that are living life on the edge. WOW! Mr. Jenkins, God has gifted you with more than an ability to write good fiction; he has gifted you with an ability to change the world for Him. (I couldn't put down the Left Behind book either!) Thank you for this incredible gift of words. "
"Riven was, for me, an incredible reminder and reinforcement of God's unconditional love and His sovereignty over everything and everyone. Sometimes I get in my Christian world and don't feel the hurt and the ache for those who don't know the Lord. I ached for Brady and how his mom treated him. I wanted to wrap my arms around him since I am a mom of 3 sons. I also wanted to talk to her, and show unconditional love for her and help her......... I forget about........ all He saved me from. This book "sobered" me and gave me very clear reminders and pictures that I won't forget.
I want to be like "Grace" when I grow up. What an amazing lady. If I can have just a portion of her grace and her forgiveness and her thinking the best of others........wow.
I feel like I truly know the characters after being so involved in their lives thru your writing~ I have recommended it to our son down in Wichita and his wife and they are currently reading it.
Thank you for the gift of writing that you give us all.
"
"Jack and I have both read RIVEN and we want to thank and congratulate you on this book! Jack read it first and I couldn't seem to pry him away from it. When I read it, I could understand why that was true!
You said it was the "book you always wanted to write." We are so glad you DID! You made the characters people we felt like we really knew, admiring some, feeling like kicking a few, cheering others. But all the while seeing God molding character in amazing ways. And then bringing it to the wrenching and vivid description of crucifixion. It is a book we will not soon forget!
Thank you, Jerry, for being faithful to God's leading and using the writing ability He gave you (and HARD WORK) to complete this book.
And thank you again for sending it to us.
In His wonderful love,
"
"I live in South Africa, have read all the Left Behind books (which I loved), and was given Riven to read by my sister-in-law. I have to say that I felt such compassion for Brady throughout the book, and also for Pastor Carey, but the last few chapters made an indelible mark on my mind. This is the best book I have ever read and I want to thank you Mr Jenkins for sharing this talent with us. I can't get those 2 people out of my mind, and am again awed by the mighty faithfulness and love of my Lord & Saviour. Our ability to judge the severity of sin is such a waste of time as God's heart is that none should perish, and this book has put a whole new perspective on how I view the things that people do, and the circumstances that lead all of us to do what we do. Thank you so much for this book!"
“I received an advance copy of RIVEN a few weeks ago. I took it to the beach with me last week and knocked it out in a couple of days. I can totally see why you are calling this book your life’s work. It is easy to see how you love both of these characters. The crucifixion aspect took me by surprise! I knew that when I finished the last page that it is a story that will stay with readers and hopefully have them reflecting on Christ’s sacrifice. That’s why I love Christian fiction! Sometimes a novel is the best way to present Biblical truths. I look forward to presenting it to our customers this summer.”
“I am currently reviewing books for Christian Retailing magazine for Strang Communications. Recently, I was assigned Riven. I was a bit dismayed when I received it because of the length. Normally, I review books below 200 pages and can give Strang a turnaround time of 24-48 hours on a review. I had no hope of doing the same for your book…I thought! However, I started it on a Sunday afternoon and finished it on Monday morning! I couldn’t put it down! Before this time, my absolutely favorite Christian book was Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. Next would be almost anything by Max Lucado. I now have a new personal favorite!
“I started reading RIVEN on my way home from ICRS, I just finished it. Now I’m trying to think of superlatives I should use to describe it. I think I will settle on “it was a wonderful read! I was hooked from the very beginning and cried through the final chapters.”
“I was sent a copy of RIVEN a few weeks ago and I couldn’t put it down. I passed it on to a friend, who actually spent time in prison, and know he will enjoy it. It is a great story! Thanks for sharing it with all of us. I’m praying that God will continue to use the gifts and talents that you have dedicated to him for his glory until his final appearance. As we watch all of creation crying out for his return and we wait patiently in expectation I’m thankful for the books that will remain to give testimony of the fact that God’s Word is true.”
“I loved RIVEN, as I read I felt your compassion for inmates and for correctional chaplains. This book was a real inspiration.”
“Mr. Jenkins has given so much to us by his writing through the years. And I would agree that RIVEN is one of his best. I cannot say how many times parts of the story, the characters, have crossed my mind since finishing the book. I know I'll read it again. Like Mr. Jenkins said on the air, "Everyone has someone in their family whom they are praying for".
“"Riven" was one unforgettable and touching story. It is the most intense and message laden book I have ever read!! Any unbeliever that reads this story and does not accept Jesus as their Savior has a very hardened heart. Two chapters were filled with the gospel message as Brady quoted from God's Word. Each character you presented in the story does not seem like an imaginary person, but could be someone living in our town---we have a trailer park close by--the likes of which Brady lived in. His story was so heart rendering, and the pastor who became the prison chaplain who felt so defeated, depicted such despair. However, in the end Christ did triumph and brought about the reader's hope of salvation and forgiveness. Brady's choice of death really had an unforgettable impression on me--the fact that he would choose to die as our Savior did, in such a cruel way. That book will be one I will never forget and I feel it is one that will leave an unforgettable impression on anyone who reads it.”
“Riven has believable characters and dialog, and a good guy and a bad guy. You end up wanting to smack the bad guy (Brady) and try to shake some sense into him. The good guy I also wanted to shake some sense into (Pastor Carey.) The story line was easy to follow, and the way Jerry breezes through time compression is amazing. I read a lot of fiction, and a little of it in this genre. I cried at the end, which says a lot for the conclusion of this book. Jerry's got a great way of "showing, not telling." You really can picture the ending. Any book that can draw such emotion from a critical reader like me earns five stars. I've read a lot of other works by Jerry, and this is one of his best. I'm not sure this is his magnum opus, because I know he's still got a lot more writing to do yet. I recommend it. It's a great weekend read. Besides being entertaining, it has spiritual merit. That doubles its value because so many books out there are good reading, but of little after-value. This story goes on into eternity.”
“I just returned from a long walk. You know why? Because, I had to come back into the real world in Lincoln Ca. I have been living the fate of each character for the last two weeks. While on the airplane, I thought use this opportunity to share the book with the man sitting next to me. He looked at it, peered over the seat where his wife and children were sitting. It’s the same one she is reading and we exchanged where in the book each of were.
Without a doubt, it is the best book I have ever read and with the content and message so CLEAR. Today many pastor’s and seminary students are not clear as to how to work with people, but in their hearts they have a desire to. If they only knew to purchase the book RIVEN.”
I just finished reading Riven a short while ago and I just wanted to say that it was amazing, the memories and emotions are still stuck on me even though it's been a while. Thank you so much for blessing me with Riven!”
“Well, this lesson gave me an excuse to stay up late and finish Jerry Jenkins latest book. Riven was awesome. I have been so busy with things that interrupt my time I was glad for the book to read. I sat at the side of my daughter –in-law hospital bed and read. She was admitted for a kidney infection- that is a serious thing when you are pregnant. But she is doing well now. She only had to stay overnight. Jerry has certainly challenged me- this is what great fiction is all about. This is what I hope to accomplish someday- great fiction.”
“I just closed the back cover on "Riven" this morning, and I don't know how to express to you how much I am getting from it. I hesitate to put into words what I "think" I am taking away, because there is so much more to it than that. I am still processing. Whenever I could pull myself away from the book, I found my mind drifting to Brady. While taking my girls to buy their school supplies yesterday, I recognized Brady in the cashier at Target....I see him in my step-brother....I see him in our youth group at church....I remember my first boyfriend in HS, and saw Brady-like tendencies. Through the book, I recognized how difficult it is to live beyond the message being engrained in your upbringing...how much energy/intentionality it takes to really want more for yourself than others want around you. While I knew you would eventually connect Brady and Thomas together, I wasn't sure how you would get there. That is what kept me engaged. I never expected Petey to die in the tornado. I never expected Brady to kill Katie. I never expected him to want to die by crucifixion. I never expected the prisoners to embrace Christ while listen to Brady recite day after day the words of his Savior. I loved the incorporation of hymns, even though I must admit I didn't know them all. It brought such purity to the story. Incidentally, one of my favorite parts of the story was the character of Frank "Yanno" LeRoy. I couldn't get over the humor with that. Made me smile every time. You must have had someone in your life that had the habit of responding with "Yeah, no." I just loved that!!! Thank you, Jerry!!!! I can't imagine how wonderful this was for you in finally putting this to print, after having it in your head so long. I am grateful to God for putting it there.”
“I’ve read Riven and couldn’t put it down. Both characters came alive so well that they easily could be someone you know, your neighbor or even yourself. Their live stories are so real. There were times when I wanted to jump into the book to rescue Brady and Thomas (the pastor). Amazingly the author showed how God can soften the hardened heart, reach people in their darkest hour or when they are in deep despair and turns their situation into something so beautiful. The message of HOPE, LOVE, GRACE and MERCY has been displayed so wonderfully. This book is not only a must read but definitely a must see in our movie theaters for hearts and lives to be changed. It has definitely impacted my life and will stick with me forever. Thank you, Jerry Jenkins, for this beautiful masterpiece. It’ll be the Christmas gift for my family and friends.”
“As I finished the book, I was crying and today I have spent a great amount of time thinking about the characters in the book. There are many people in our (my) path of life that correspond with those in the book. I haven't digested it all yet but will continue to ponder and think.
Thanks for writing this book and representing so many difficult "predicaments" that we face as we walk through life and seek a real, practical, and growing faith with the Lord. I don't want to live my life as a Pharisee (or legalist) but I don't want to be a hypocrite and just play the part. I want to live the "real deal" every day. Brady Wayne Darby came face to face with his sin and guilt.”
“Being in ministry myself I appreciated how you covered the Rev and Grace and the beatings they took trying to serve the Lord. I think Christians need to cut our servants in Christ a little more slack than they do. I think it will be a friendly reminder of how to treat their own pastors and wives. It’s tough being in ministry - I hope people realize that. I also liked how you covered the whole "wait on God" angle with them too. Sometimes in ministry we want to see immediate results, but we just need to trust that His timing is always perfect and he can see more than we can. I'm so glad for that.”
“I have been privileged to hear and read interviews you've given about Riven recently. I was quite impacted by reading the book last week. (As a transplant to Atlanta, I especially related to the scenes there.) The frustration I felt in seeing Brady fall again and again must be nothing compared to how disappointed God is when we fail him over and over as well. And how many of us have seen Thomases in ministries with which we are connected, and more that probably don't publicly admit frustration there. Both of these men's stories show that we do have a faithful God, no matter the level of our faith (oh, to have faith like Grace had!). Both stories also remind us that we all have family members whose walk with the Lord we pray becomes closer.”
“This morning I crawled back in to our guest room at the crack of dawn to finish Riven. Wow, that was one of the most profound books I’ve ever read. I feel sort of drained, (in a good spiritual way) like I need to go to the beach and spend the day w/ the Lord. It sure gives you a lot to think about, and that’s what’s so powerful about the book – you made the Gospel message of love and grace come alive in such an incredibly unique and moving way. There were moments so touching and some gut wrenching, I was left in tears, and then there were some wonderfully humorous lines that had me cracking up. It was fabulous how you brought to life such a diverse range of characters from the trailer park, to the conservative pastor’s world, to the jail house, to our Savior, Christ Himself.”
“Just finished reading Riven! What an amazing story. You are blessed from the Lord with a mind that so powerfully presents the Truth of Scripture. Don't really know why but from the moment reading of the crucifixion mode for Brady’s death I began to cry. The quieting of the pods and prisoners was so powerfully overcoming. Liked the reality of a Pastors treatment, Rav’s dilemma, Dirk moving toward Christ, but best of all the realization again of all Christ did for me.”
“If there was a title for ‘Most Renowned Christian Novelist’, Jerry B. Jenkins would be a top contender. With more than 170 published works, fiction and non-fiction, 12 New York Times bestsellers and over 63 million copies of his books sold since 1995 I’m not sure who else could come close to claiming the title. With such a massive body of work, I cannot claim to be remotely acquainted with his range of writing abilities. I have read the Left Behind series, co-authored with Tim LaHaye that catapulted Jenkins into the household conversations of Christian families’ nation-wide.
Jenkins’ latest solo novel, Riven is both similar to and completely disparate from the series that drove him to fame. While the Left Behind series did speak to me during the time that I was first coming to know Christ, I’m pleased to say that Jenkins’ writing has markedly improved since then.
Riven is the story of two men – a sinner and a saint. Thomas Carey is a devoted man of God. Committed to pouring himself out for God’s people, he and his wife Grace are devout followers of Jesus; never failing in their devotions, always striving onwards and upwards, despite the lack of fruit from their ministry. Brady Wayne Darby is the archetypal bad boy. Raised in a trailer park by an alcoholic mother, he soon falls prey to the sinful nature that begins to devour him. Like us all, he is unable to escape from sin under his own power. He quickly falls prey to lying, theft, drug abuse, and various felonies that lead to repeat visits to correctional institutes over the course of his adult life.
While the contrast of these two lives may seem contrived within the context of a review, it is anything but. The characters of these two men are developed over the course of hundreds of pages. We follow each of them through their struggles, their difficulties and their crises. We become first hand witnesses of their lives; we come to know them as personally as a friend or relative.
I know these men as I have known few other characters – I will never forget them. Thomas, so stubbornly faithful, clings to the rock though he lacks a fruitful ministry. Brady slips deeper into darkness, the burden of his sin mounting, and no hope in sight. I came to love them both. I have never developed such a heart for an unsaved character. Brady must have been difficult for Jenkins, a believer, to write. Once a man is saved it is difficult to remember the burden, the despair, being lost. Jenkins captures it all, magnificently. Thomas and Brady need each other, and when they finally meet the world is shaken for Jesus.
I’m surprised that controversy hasn’t arisen over this title. The entire premise, particularly the conclusion, is sensational, unbelievable. I was swept away in an emotional maelstrom that had me weeping throughout the last 100 pages. It is easy to suspend disbelief when you can hardly see through your tears. Read with Kleenex at hand is my cautionary warning.
Jenkins makes it work, once again rattling hearts for God. I was not at all expecting what this book offered me: a graphic reminder of what Jesus has done for me, a story of radical redemption, the promise of hope, and something more than these three added together, something elusive and hard to define that exists in the melding of these elements.
Who’s to know what impact Riven will have as the good news spreads? Jenkins work has touched the hearts of many and led them to repentance and belief. I can picture it happening again. Riven is a treasure to share, not only amongst believers, but also for those who don’t realize that what Jesus did on the cross was for them.”
“I stayed up until 2:00 this morning reading RIVEN, and missed an hour of work this morning finishing it. It was the first novel I’ve read in years that moved me to tears. Even now, as I’m writing this, I am weeping.
You perfectly captured human nature in your characters Thomas Carey and Brady Darby. I thought Mrs. Carey was too syrupy and saintly, but I suppose there might actually be living human beings like her.
The reason I am writing, though, is because of the bigger impact your novel has had on me. Fifteen years ago, my husband tried to murder me by stabbing me twelve times. Even though I truly understand God’s grace for myself and for others I’ve encountered since that horrible event, I’ve never wanted God to forgive the man who tried to kill me. It wasn’t that I didn’t believe that the Lord could forgive him, but I didn’t want Him to. Just as Katie’s parents wanted Brady to go to hell, I wanted the man who tried to destroy me to go to hell.
Believe me, when someone you love tried to take your life, any notion you may have had about the meaning of love is demolished. It took nine years for me to hit bottom and to turn to the only one who had ever loved me unconditionally, Jesus Christ.
I freely accepted the grace offered to me, but I was stingy with it for others. I wanted God to punish everyone who has ever hurt me in my life. I wanted Jesus to myself.
As time has gone on, I have gotten better about sharing my Jesus. But it wasn’t until I read your novel that I fully grasp how great and beautiful and pure God’s love for us is. Thank you for that priceless gift, my brother.”
“Never has a novel brought tears to my eyes as Riven did. I feel as thought I was guided to find your book among the many on the library shelf since I have never read your books
Brady Wayne Darby will never be forgotten. My heart broke for this boy. I hoped he would succeed in one of his endeavors but I knew where he was headed. He never had a chance due to his surroundings and family life.
Rav’s thoughts were mine when she confronted her dad and questioned him on how he could continue keeping the faith when doors slammed in his face constantly.
I related to these characters so deeply because I have my granddaughter’s mother and father in prison. I only pray there is a Thomas Carey where they are.
Before their incarceration my faith started to dwindle. Riven opened my eyes again and I learned from it. NEVER has there been a more beautiful ending to a novel such as this.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving us your genius mind. You have accomplished your life’s dream. If you touch one life then you have succeeded.”
“I just finished reading Riven.
You nailed it, buddy!
As someone who grew up with a similar background to Brady’s, and who’s worked in law enforcement and the correctional field prior to pasturing, I could identify with the story and the characters better than most. Instead of jail, I spent a few years in the armed forces, and that’s where I committed myself to following Christ.
I’ve had the privilege of pasturing a large church for some time now, and while I do enjoy my work I’ve had enough stuff dumped on me in the past few years to fill a cesspool the size of Lake Placid. ‘Nuff said…I guess this must be a Monday!
Thank you for writing that book. Anything that’s well written has been rewritten, and I recognize the work you put into that.”
“Gotta tell ya, after only a couple of hours reading (and only 4 hours of sleep), I’m hooked on this book. I actually fell asleep wondering about Peter. You treat him in the book just like he’s treated in his life. Kind of an afterthought to everyone. (And that’s a compliment on the writing, not a complaint. If you paid more attention to him in the story, it wouldn’t be realistic about the reality of his life.)
But I already want to slap mom, shake Brady’s hand, attend a church led by the Pastor, and tell the pain in the tail couple to get a life and let the Pastor run his church. But most of all I want to adopt Peter and just hug him for a month.
Anyway, just wanted you to know that I think, after the first 12 chapters, that this is an incredibly written story. Can’t wait to find out who is headed to the chamber, but I also think the book could end an leave me guessing and I’d still love the story leading up to it.
If I could compare it to any book, and only from the standpoint of one that hooked me from the first chapter, it would be the Painted House by Grisham. Which, regardless of all the successes of his “legal” books, is at the top of my list of all time favorite books.”
“I finished reading Riven on Saturday evening – I read it in four or five sittings. I want to congratulate you on your story. I’ve read a number of your books and I think this is your best, most compelling story. And the most daring!
My prayer is that there will be much fruit from this labor of love – in sales and in lives touched.” Al
“Jenkins has a gift for rapid-fire chapters that alternate between parallel plot lines and cliff hangers that pull the reader form one chapter to the next – it is one of those books you really don’t want to put down. But I will say, if you were a juvenile delinquent in high school, like I was, it will make you remember things about your teenage years you would just as soon forget. If you’re a pastor who has faced rejection from congregation after congregation over a lifetime of service, it will make you remember things you would just as soon forget. But what I hope readers will gain from it is the ability to put themselves in others’ shoes; to judge less, forgive more and know that no matter how we might view others, God loves us all just the same and His will is that none should be lost.”
“That was probably the best novel we’ve ever read. (Not just saying that!) Judy and I started reading and literally could not put it down; what a story! That definitely put the “cross” in a whole new light. Wow!”
“Absolutely lovely!!!
Thank you for reading us this morning excerpts from Riven in chapel. I pray to Jesus a copy of this book will reach every single inmate in the country and overseas as well. If I had the means, I would make sure of that.”
“What an incredible story! Over the last week, I have grabbed whatever time I could to learning about and learning from the characters in your story. I even grabbed 15 minutes before going to church yesterday and was moved to tears as I read about the revival in the prison. As my wife said to me last night, ‘That book must have been good. You don’t usually read a book that fast.’ I think it has all the ingredients to become a classic.”
“Just finished reading Riven and words are inadequate to express my appreciation for your book.
Normally, I’m not a fiction reader, but how could I ever forget Brady Wayne Darby and THoma Carey, not to mention Grace, Ravinia, Dirk, Gladys and Yanno, among others?
Wish I had the funds to send at least one copy of Riven to every prison and every library in America. Congratulations on a great book.”
“I was afraid if I started reading, I wouldn’t have time to finish during our bus summer season, but I made it in less than a week and wept through the last five chapters. And it HAS stuck with me. I think of the story almost every day. You’ve come up with another winner.”
“This morning I crawled back into our guest room at the crack of dawn to finish Riven. Wow, that was one of the most profound books I’ve ever read. I feel sort of drained, (in a good spiritual way) like I need to go to the beach and spend the day w/ the Lord. It sure gives you a lot to think about, and that’s what’s so powerful about the book – you made the Gospel message of love and grace coma live in such an incredibly unique and moving way. There were moments so touching and some gut-wrenching, I was left in tears, and then there were some wonderfully humorous lines that had me cracking up. It was fabulous how you brought to life such a diverse range of characters from the trailer park, to the conservative pastor’s world, to the jailhouse, to our Savior, Christ Himself.”
“Riven is the “BOMB”! I read it in a week and I thought it was the best story I have ever read, bar none!! I cannot wait to read something else from him!! It was incredible!! Thanks so much!!”
“Thank you for Riven. I found it riveting. With so much scripture and the Gospel woven into the story, I pray that many receive the good news.”
“I LOVED the entire Riven book Jerry. Such a great plot, artistically written with the beautiful poetry of the old hymns, the clear salvation message, great interwoven story line and many unpredictables (that’s what I love to read!). My favorite book was Though None Go With…until now; this one is amazing! Great job! I’m praying for readers to come to know Him through reading it’s pages and of course the H.S. conviction.
Thank you for writing, pouring your heart into each book, trusting what God would have you communicate in such a creative, interesting way and all for His Glory. Don’t stop!”
“I have just finished Riven. Wow! Still thinking about it. It was riveting, honest, challenging, humbling. Thanks for sharing your gift with the masses.”
“It is the most intense and message-laden book I have ever read!! Any unbeliever that read this story and does not accept Jesus as their Savior has a very hardened heart.
Each character you presented in the story does not seem like an imaginary person, but could be someone living in our town – we have a trailer park close by – the likes of which Brady lived in. His story was so heart rending, and the pastor who became the prison chaplain who felt so defeated, depicted such despair. However, in the end Christ did triumph and brought about the reader’s hope of salvation and forgiveness. Brady’s choice of death really had an unforgettable impression on me – the fact that he would choose to die as our Savior did, in such a cruel way. That book will be one I never forget and I feel it is one that will leave an unforgettable impression on anyone who reads it.”
“When I finished [Riven], I sat for a long time with it in my lap, reflecting on it. I think what hit me most was not just the good writing, which makes the book an excellent study for writers on how to do fiction the right way, but the depth of understanding that Jerry shows.
As I read about Thomas Carey I found myself saying, ‘How does Jerry know’? I’ve been a pastor, first in West Virginia and then in New Jersey, and I have seen what Jerry shows so well of the struggles, the pain inflicted by congregations and the faithful saints who keep going. In a world that only understands big “successful” ministries, Jerry was right on target.
It happens again with Ravinia and Brady. Scratch any Christian family and we discover the quiet suffering that comes from having a wayward son or daughter or grandchild. We don’t hear about that in most churches, but in the pews there is that terrible pain. And with Brady, especially in prison, I could identify. I’ve been to enough prisons, once working with two men in a prison in Virginia, and have been in places that are as different as Leavenworth and Cook County Jail. So there was a lot of ‘how did Jerry know this to get it so right?’
By the time that the book comes to the Roman Road and the long Scripture quotations by Brady, the reader has been so set up for it that instead of it being preachy or intrusive, the reader is pulling it out, wanting more. This is writing in such a way that the reader is longing for Brady and the other prisoners to have what Carey has.
Bottom line, I guess, is the refreshing aspect of having a book that is real to life, including the lingering illness and death of Grace. This should be a book welcomed by a lot of readers. I can easily see where one reader will recommend it to another.”
“It sure kept me going. Your short description of the crucifixion was so vivid I had to turn away, then remembered, oh yeah, this is not a movie…that’s an art.”
“Sunday morning, nearing the end but unable to finish before leaving for church, knowing the crucifixion plans were in motion, I almost felt I should request prayer for Brady Wayne Darby.
You gave the characters life and your hope no doubt will be fulfilled – Riven will stay with readers long after the final page. Beautiful work!”
“What I couldn’t get over was that the ending was so stunning. I thought that when you had described the plot, including the crucifixion, you’d already given away the ending. So when I read about the revival in the prison (that was the stunner for me), it was a surprise – and very moving and believable. It has stuck with me a long time.
I really enjoyed seeing the characters develop, and by the time I got to the end, mulled I over, went back to the beginning and read again about the bad boy who blew every opportunity he had, I almost couldn’t believe it was the same guy who was at the end of the book – and that I’d been so brought along into believing his transformation.”
“I think it took me about 3 days to finish. Wow…absolutely loved it. Besides it being an incredibly well written story, there were 2 things that really hit home with me. First, having been in the ministry for almost 20 years, the pains of Pastor Carey hit a little too close to home at times. And then, more specifically, having served as a youth pastor for all of my years in ministry, I’ve known and dealt with so many Brady Wayne Darbys (I believe) that it literally brought tears to my eyes at times. Then at the conclusion, I was left wondering what sacrifice I would be willing to make to truly share the message of what Christ did for us.”

Without a doubt, it is the best book I have ever read and with the content and message so CLEAR. Today many pastor’s and seminary students are not clear as to how to work with people, but in their hearts they have a desire to. If they only knew to purchase the book RIVEN.”

“Thoroughly moving, RIVEN leaves an indelible impression on the reader.
Its characters and message stay with you long after the final chapter.
For me, it is also a deeply personal reminder of why God called me to prison ministry so many years ago.”
“Jerry Jenkins sets the standard for creative stories and compelling novels.
Any bookshelf that is lacking his writing is missing a treasure.”
“Jerry Jenkins writes from his heart a unique and engaging story. RIVEN is touching and unforgettable.”
“This novel will stay with you long after the final page. RIVEN’S complex characters will keep you riding an
emotional wave until you are washed ashore in an astonishing conclusion. Read RIVEN at your own risk. It might unsettle the
way you live.”
“Some books are fun to read; other books testify to real life transformation. RIVEN does both.
You’ll recognize yourself in the character – the weary man of God, the rebel without cause, the searching 20-something.
Find in their stories the place where real life begins – on level ground at the foot of the cross.
Jenkins gives hope to anyone thinking that they’ve run too far from God.
RIVEN pictures God’s relentless pursuit of each of us. RIVEN is a testimony to God’s power to transform any and every
repentant person.”
"In RIVEN Jerry Jenkins has literally cast a "good spell." I was captured from the beginning and found myself becoming so
absorbed in the characters I felt like I could call them by phone! The story takes you on a journey of emotions that leaves you
breathless in the end. The word awe comes to mind, and any book that takes you to such a place in your heart is priceless
indeed! I highly recommend it to all!"

“Riven, by Jerry Jenkins, is the most compelling drama I’ve read in a long time.
In two parallel story lines, Jenkins introduces us into the lives of career criminal Brady Darby and the worn-down pastor, Thomas Carey. Their lives converge when Brady and Thomas both are hardened by life’s knocks and bruises, but the bulk of the book presents those knocks and bruises, giving the reader a clear understanding of what makes each man tick.
With the expertise of a seasoned psychologist, Jenkins illustrates the development of a criminal without once allowing the reader an emotion stronger than disappointment. Brady Darby’s life is tough; his choices make it tougher. But everything Darby experiences, from adolescent anger to adult rage, is understandable if not condonable. Even Brady’s most heinous crime, while expected, is perceivable. But instead of revulsion, I felt pity.
Jenkins lets the reader into the private life of a pastor, too, with things I had certainly never considered: church politics, the demand for entertaining sermons, the low income–not to mention the heartache of a family member who falls away from the faith. Add to the mix a wife with a serious disease, and it is easy to see how a preacher like Thomas Carey could feel defeated. When no other church is available for him to pastor, he becomes a chaplain for a prison. Not just any prison–not a penitentiary, where criminals become penitant and eventually return to society. An end-of-the-road supermax correctional facility where those not doomed to execution will never again see the sun. An institution of society’s worst offenders who have no use for God, much less a pastor.
When Thomas and Brady finally meet, things happen that are so miraculous, so improbable, the reader is required to suspend belief and bear with the author. My ambiguity about the conclusion lasted all the way through the tear-jerking climax. I’m still torn between wanting a less incredible finale and an inability to conceive of a more fitting conclusion.
Jenkins’s strength as a writer is without a doubt his characterization. Every character, even the most minor, is fully rounded and believable without once subjecting the reader to long drawn-out descriptions. Bad boy Brady Darby is so sympathetic as to not be a villain at all, nor was he intended to be. In truth, the villain is Brady’s mother, a totally unsympathetic woman whose presence permeates the entire book although her appearances are few. Her opposite extreme is Thomas Carey’s wife, Grace, a woman so perfect as to seem unlikely. Yet, Jenkins dips his brush into the color of stubbornness, and by applying that one simple flaw, adds hues of believability to Grace Carey.
When readers or writers discuss bringing characters to life, this is what they’re talking about.
Riven gets five stars from me!”
“Jenkins’ RIVEN leaves a lasting impression long after the final page is read.”
“New York Times best-selling author Jenkins said RIVEN is the novel he’s always wanted to write, perhaps because of its
story of redemption. It may also prove to be the book the average bibliophile has always wanted to read.
With RIVEN, Jenkins has delivered a gripping, page-turning inspirational novel about redemption and a life changed. The easily accessible story is poised to appeal beyond the author’s “Left Behind” fans to a wider range of readers.”
“Left Behind fans may be surprised by Jenkins’ versatility”
“Jerry B. Jenkins is one of the best Christian authors writing today. RIVEN is a memorable tale starring a man who feels he is
a failure and another who only has death waiting for him in three years time. They met and both feel the Lord working through them giving
each what they need. This book will move the audience in so many ways and make them feel so many things.
This is a masterpiece”
“‘RIVEN’ is unlike any book I’ve ever read. It’s also unlike any book Jerry B.
Jenkins has ever written.”
Is that a good thing? Absolutely!
By the end of this massive story, you will no longer be a mere observer. You will be woven into its fabric, and it will seep into your pores and become a piece of your existence. You will go places you never wanted to go, see things you may not want to see, and feel things that will be difficult to feel.
But you will never take another minister for granted, and you will never look at a lost soul the same way again.
Masterfully written, RIVEN will most definitely remain a part of who you are. And that’s a very good thing.
It’s that good.”
“I had a very cool privilege over the weekend – author Jerry Jenkins, whom you might know from the left behind series has a new
book out that hits store shelves today, and I got to read it a bit early. It’s called RIVEN, and it tracks the lives of a career criminal
and a prison chaplain whose paths eventually intersect when the criminal lands on death row.
Now, was it a good read? Absolutely
– Jenkins has a gift for rapid-fire chapters that alternate between parallel plot lines and cliff-hangers that pull the reader from one
chapter to the next – it is one of those books you really don’t want to put down. But I will say, that if you
were a juvenile delinquent in high school, like I was,
it will make you remember things about your teenage years you would just assume forget…if
you’re a pastor who has faced rejection from congregation after congregation over a lifetime of service, it will make you remember things
you would just assume forget. But what I hope readers will gain from it is the ability to put themselves in others’ shoes;
to judge
less; forgive more. And know that no matter how we might view others, god loves us all, just the same, and his will is that none should be
lost. Check it out…RIVEN…by Jerry Jenkins.
I mentioned earlier that I got to read a pre-release copy of Jerry Jenkins’ new book, RIVEN, over the weekend, and while it’s an excellent read, I’m still struggling with some of the emotions it dredged up. One of the main characters is a career criminal who really wants to make good decisions in life, but makes the wrong ones at every turn. Now obviously, I’m not a career criminal, but I so related to that character in Jenkins’ book, especially during his high school years…I was right back in the hallways of Lewis Palmer high school …getting bad grades, not fitting in, skipping school, hating my life, making bad decisions – and the most frustrating part was not even knowing why I made such bad decisions – it was like they were out of my control. If you’ve been there and done that, you know what it’s like to look back and examine that…it’s a desolate, depressing place to go mentally. And, you can imagine my peace now when I read Paul’s words in Romans, where he says, “I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do – this I keep on doing!” Wow! I’m not the only one! And, Paul cries for “rescue”… that’s exactly what I was crying for…back then, and at times, now. What I’ve discovered, is that there’s only one source of rescue…a relationship with Jesus…I wish I’d figured that out sooner…but I will say this…the dark times then make me that much more grateful for the peace he gives me now!”
“Jenkins succeeds in emotionally engaging readers through his two main characters”
“I’m writing this review as the tears are just beginning to dry on my face. RIVEN by Jerry Jenkins is
a powerful, life-changing/impacting novel. Read the unfolding story of these lives, how they affect each
other, and ultimately how Truth revealed changes all their lives.
RIVEN is for the person who feels absolutely hopeless. RIVEN is for the person who has given and given in ministry yet feel their work has yielded now results. RIVEN is for the person who enjoys good reading. RIVEN is one of those rare books that’s for everyone. If you buy only one book this year, buy RIVEN.”
“I finished RIVEN this weekend and WOW! It moved my heart and brought tears to my eyes. That doesn't happen often.”

“Jerry Jenkins is one of the most entertaining novelists of our day and RIVEN does not disappoint. This book is special
for two reasons. It’s message of grace is powerful and profound – this is the kind of book that you will want to pass
on to others. In fact, even as an advance reader copy the book has been passing from person to person. Also, this is the book Jerry
says he has been waiting to write for twenty years. He has labored over this novel like none other he has written. His passion for
this book clearly shines through in every page. With Riven, Jenkins is at the top of his game.”
“What an incredible story! I grabbed whatever time I could to keep learning about and learning from the characters
in this story. I was moved to tears as I read about the revival in prison. As my wife said to me last night, “that book
must have been good. You don’t usually read a book that fast.” I am so excited about the ministry potential of
this book. I hope Jerry receives thousands of letters from people stating how their hearts were touched from the words you put
together. It will be great to see how God uses this book in the months and years ahead. I think it has all the ingredients
to become an instant classic. ”
“Riven is a phenomenal story. I found myself engrossed in it to the very last page.
I like Brady Darby, and I was rooting for him at every step of the way--although he makes bad decision after bad decision. I found myself saying, "Brady, don't do it!" He finally ends up in a maximum security prison. I've never visited such a facility, so I don't know how accurate Jenkins is in his descriptions, but it's certainly chilling.
I think Thomas Carey is all too typical of small-town pastors who struggle to find meaning in their calling. So I was fascinated by Thomas's transition to the role of prison chaplain. And of course his life finally intersects with Brady's deep in the bowels of the prison.
Jerry Jenkins says this is the novel he has always wanted to write. Well, I think he has hit a homerun. This is a novel people will think about long after they finish it--and they'll want to discuss it with friends.
There are a few elements that are unbelievable, but I didn't find that they detracted from the flow of the story. I recommend this book to anyone--Christian or non-Christian.”
